Contains copies of 284 letters written by Scull as brigade commissary and, later, chief commissary of the Northern District, Department of the South, Hilton Head, S.C., concerning the acquisition and disposition of subsistence stores and the prosecution of illegal military sales and thefts of subsistence stores and commissary supplies. Includes discussion of such commodities as beef, ice, whiskey, potatoes, etc.; letters document Scull's responsibility for commissary supplies at Edisto, Daufuskie, Tybee, and other seacoast islands, as far south as St. Augustine, Fla.; looting of supplies by members of the 100th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers; and quality of food supplied to African American freedmen or "contrabands."
